If you have chest pain, fainting, breathlessness, or palpitations that last more than a few minutes or come with dizziness, seek urgent medical care. Essential oils are not a treatment for arrhythmia, and nothing here replaces a doctor.

Your heart skips, flutters or races. It passes, but it leaves you rattled. So you search for something natural, and a hundred pages promise that an oil will fix it.

Most of those pages are wrong. Yet the honest answer about essential oils for heart palpitations is more interesting than either “miracle” or “nonsense.” There is real research, and it points to a specific, limited role.

This article lays out that research plainly. It shows which oils have evidence behind them, what that evidence actually says, how to use them safely, and, above all, when to stop searching and see a doctor.

What Palpitations Are, and What Oils Can and Cannot Do

Before weighing essential oils for heart palpitations, define the term. A palpitation is the feeling of your own heartbeat: a thump, a flutter, a skipped beat, or a racing pulse. Common triggers include stress, anxiety, caffeine, poor sleep, dehydration, and hormonal shifts.

Here is the key point. In many people, palpitations are driven by the nervous system’s stress response. That is the one place aromatherapy has a plausible role, because calming scents can lower stress signals.

What oils cannot do is fix an electrical fault in the heart. Atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia and similar conditions need diagnosis and medical treatment. No scent changes that.

What the Research Actually Shows

This is where most articles on essential oils for heart palpitations either overclaim or wave the whole topic away. So here are the studies, with their limits.

<rect width="680" height="640" fill="#fff"/><rect x="0" y="0" width="680" height="104" fill="#1f4437"/><text x="340.0" y="46" text-anchor="middle" fill="#ffffff" font-size="24" font-weight="bold">What the Research Says</text><rect x="300.0" y="56" width="80" height="3" fill="#c9a227"/><text x="340.0" y="80" text-anchor="middle" fill="#c9a227" font-size="14">Essential oils and heart rate, honestly summarised</text><rect x="42.0" y="130" width="186.66666666666666" height="98" rx="10" fill="#faf6ec" stroke="#c9a227" stroke-width="1.5"/><text x="135.33333333333331" y="175" text-anchor="middle" fill="#1f4437" font-size="23" font-weight="bold">93 to 85</text><text x="135.33333333333331" y="200" text-anchor="middle" fill="#26302b" font-size="12">heart rate after lavender,</text><text x="135.33333333333331" y="216" text-anchor="middle" fill="#26302b" font-size="12">ICU study</text><rect x="246.66666666666666" y="130" width="186.66666666666666" height="98" rx="10" fill="#faf6ec" stroke="#c9a227" stroke-width="1.5"/><text x="340.0" y="175" text-anchor="middle" fill="#1f4437" font-size="23" font-weight="bold">52</text><text x="340.0" y="200" text-anchor="middle" fill="#26302b" font-size="12">hypertensive adults in the</text><text x="340.0" y="216" text-anchor="middle" fill="#26302b" font-size="12">4-week blend study</text><rect x="451.3333333333333" y="130" width="186.66666666666666" height="98" rx="10" fill="#faf6ec" stroke="#c9a227" stroke-width="1.5"/><text x="544.6666666666666" y="175" text-anchor="middle" fill="#1f4437" font-size="23" font-weight="bold">5</text><text x="544.6666666666666" y="200" text-anchor="middle" fill="#26302b" font-size="12">randomised trials pooled</text><text x="544.6666666666666" y="216" text-anchor="middle" fill="#26302b" font-size="12">in a review</text><circle cx="49" cy="256" r="6" fill="#c9a227"/><text x="66" y="262" fill="#1f4437" font-size="15.5" font-weight="bold">Lavender</text><text x="66" y="283" fill="#26302b" font-size="14">Lower heart rate and blood pressure in heart patients across five</text><text x="66" y="302" fill="#26302b" font-size="14">trials</text><circle cx="49" cy="333" r="6" fill="#c9a227"/><text x="66" y="339" fill="#1f4437" font-size="15.5" font-weight="bold">Lavender + ylang ylang + bergamot</text><text x="66" y="360" fill="#26302b" font-size="14">Four weeks of daily inhalation: lower BP, pulse and cortisol</text><circle cx="49" cy="391" r="6" fill="#c9a227"/><text x="66" y="397" fill="#1f4437" font-size="15.5" font-weight="bold">Ylang ylang</text><text x="66" y="418" fill="#26302b" font-size="14">Largest drop in pulse rate in a 2025 randomised trial</text><circle cx="49" cy="449" r="6" fill="#c9a227"/><text x="66" y="455" fill="#1f4437" font-size="15.5" font-weight="bold">Sweet orange</text><text x="66" y="476" fill="#26302b" font-size="14">Raised heart rate and alertness. Average heart rate fell from about 93 to 85 beats per minute, and systolic blood pressure fell from about 124 to 107. The authors called for larger, controlled trials, because this study had no control group.

A systematic review in cardiovascular patients pooled five randomised trials of lavender in people with heart disease. It found reductions in blood pressure and heart rate, along with lower anxiety and stress, compared with control groups.

A Lavender, Ylang Ylang and Bergamot Blend

One of the most cited studies gave 52 people with high blood pressure a blend of lavender, ylang ylang and bergamot to inhale once a day for four weeks. Compared with controls, the group showed lower blood pressure, a lower pulse, less reported stress, and lower cortisol, the stress hormone.

This is the study behind the “heart blend” you see in many aromatherapy books. It is a small study, and it looked at blood pressure rather than palpitations directly. Still, it is a genuine, controlled result.

Ylang Ylang and Pulse Rate

A 2025 randomised trial in India gave children either ylang ylang, lavender, or a placebo scent before a dental visit. Both oils reduced anxiety compared with placebo. Ylang ylang produced the largest drop in pulse rate.

Earlier work in healthy adults found ylang ylang lowered blood pressure and heart rate, while increasing self-reported calm. Together, these point to ylang ylang as the oil with the most consistent effect on pulse.

An Oil That Does the Opposite

Not every pleasant oil calms the heart. In one study, sweet orange oil raised heart rate and alertness. That makes it a poor choice when your goal is a slower pulse. Save the bright citrus oils for mornings, not for palpitations.

The Honest Summary

Put together, the research supports a modest claim. Inhaling lavender, ylang ylang, or a blend of the two with bergamot can lower heart rate and blood pressure in some people, largely by reducing stress. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health notes that much aromatherapy research remains small and preliminary, and Johns Hopkins Medicine makes the same point. So start there.

Direct inhalation. Put one drop of ylang ylang or lavender on a tissue. Breathe slowly for two to three minutes when you feel a flutter. Slow breathing itself helps, so the two work together.

Diffusing. Three drops of lavender, or two of lavender and one of ylang ylang, for 30 minutes in the evening. Our post on the best essential oils for sleep covers bedtime routines.

Roll-on. Two percent in a 10 ml bottle of jojoba: for example, 2 drops lavender, 1 drop ylang ylang, 1 drop bergamot. Apply to wrists and the back of the neck. Our essential oil dilution guide has the ratios.

The research blend. Equal parts lavender, ylang ylang and bergamot, inhaled from a tissue once a day, is the closest match to the four-week study above.

Pair any of these with the basics that actually move the needle: less caffeine, more water, regular sleep, and a few minutes of slow breathing. The oil supports those habits. It does not replace them. For all application methods, see how to use essential oils.

Cautions Specific to Heart Health

A few oils and situations need extra care when choosing essential oils for heart palpitations.

!
If you take blood thinners, avoid patchouli and clove in topical blends. Patchouli shows antiplatelet activity, linked to its alpha-bulnesene content, and clove has similar effects. Our patchouli essential oil guide explains this. Speak to your doctor before regular topical use of any oil.

Stimulating oils. Sweet orange, rosemary, peppermint and eucalyptus can raise alertness and, in some people, heart rate. Avoid them when the goal is a calmer pulse.

Blood pressure medication. If your blood pressure is already controlled by medicine, tell your doctor before using oils that may lower it further.

Ylang ylang in large amounts. Its scent is intense. Too much can cause nausea or headache, which will not help a racing heart. One or two drops is plenty.

Never ingest. Swallowing oils is dangerous and offers no benefit here.

For general safety, including pets, children and pregnancy, see our essential oil safety guide.

When to See a Doctor

This section matters more than any list of essential oils for heart palpitations. Please read it.

Seek urgent medical care if palpitations come with:

Chest pain or pressure

Fainting, or feeling close to fainting

Shortness of breath

Severe dizziness or confusion

A very fast pulse that does not settle within a few minutes

Book a routine appointment if palpitations are new, happen often, last a long time, or run in your family alongside heart disease. A doctor can run a simple ECG and, if needed, a monitor you wear for a day or two. Most causes are treatable, and many are harmless once identified.

Use essential oils alongside that care, for the calm they can offer. Never use them instead of it.

Frequently Asked Questions

<details class="kae-faq__item">
Can essential oils stop heart palpitations?

Not directly. Essential oils cannot correct a heart rhythm problem. However, research shows that inhaling lavender or ylang ylang can lower heart rate and blood pressure in some people by reducing stress. For palpitations driven by stress or anxiety, that calming effect may help. For any other cause, see a doctor.

</details><details class="kae-faq__item">
Which essential oil is best for an irregular heartbeat?

No essential oil treats an irregular heartbeat, which needs medical diagnosis. For stress-related palpitations, ylang ylang has the most consistent evidence for lowering pulse rate, and lavender is the most studied for heart rate and blood pressure. Use them by inhalation, and see a doctor about the irregular rhythm itself.

</details><details class="kae-faq__item">
Is ylang ylang good for heart palpitations?

It has the best evidence of any oil for lowering pulse rate. A randomised trial found ylang ylang produced the largest drop in pulse among children before a dental visit, and studies in adults show lower blood pressure and heart rate. One or two drops inhaled is enough. Too much can cause nausea.

</details><details class="kae-faq__item">
Does lavender oil lower heart rate?

Several studies suggest it can. In one intensive-care study, average heart rate fell from about 93 to 85 after lavender inhalation, and a review of five randomised trials in heart patients found lower heart rate and blood pressure. The effect is modest and likely linked to reduced stress.

</details><details class="kae-faq__item">
Which essential oils should I avoid if I have palpitations?

Avoid stimulating oils such as sweet orange, peppermint, rosemary and eucalyptus when your goal is a calmer pulse, since they can raise alertness and heart rate. If you take blood thinners, also avoid patchouli and clove in skin blends, and speak to your doctor before regular topical use of any oil.

</details><details class="kae-faq__item">
When should I worry about heart palpitations?

Seek urgent care if palpitations come with chest pain, fainting, breathlessness, severe dizziness, or a very fast pulse that does not settle. Book a routine appointment if they are new, frequent or long lasting. A simple ECG can identify most causes, and many are treatable.

</details>

The Bottom Line

Essential oils for heart palpitations have a real but narrow role. Lavender and ylang ylang, inhaled, can lower heart rate and blood pressure in some people by easing stress. That is what the research supports, and no more.

Use them for calm, alongside good sleep, less caffeine and slow breathing. Then let a doctor rule out anything that needs treatment. Palpitations can be harmless, or they can signal a heart rhythm problem that needs treatment.
