A Classic Incense Resin

The benzoin tree grows in Java, Sumatra and Thailand up to about eight metres tall. Deep incisions are made in the trunk, and the greyish sap that exudes hardens into resinous lumps that are collected from the bark.

The cleaned resin is then processed to produce the thick resinoid. Gum Benjamin is one of the classic ingredients of incense and has been widely used in perfumery.

Harvesting & Extraction

Benzoin is prepared as a resinoid by solvent extraction of the collected resin (often with benzyl benzoate as a diluent), rather than steam distillation.
