Honest About the Label

What Therapeutic Grade Actually Means

There is no government agency, pharmacopoeia or international body that certifies an essential oil as therapeutic grade. The phrase was coined by the industry, and any supplier can print it on any label. Understanding that is the single most useful thing a buyer can know about this category.

That does not make the term meaningless in practice — it signals a supplier's intent to sell oils suitable for aromatherapy and topical use rather than for cleaning products or industrial fragrance. But intent is not evidence. When a supplier uses the phrase, the correct next question is: show me the GC-MS. If that request is met with a marketing brochure instead of a chromatogram, you have your answer.

Reading a GC-MS Report as a Buyer

You do not need to be an analytical chemist to get value out of a chromatogram. Four checks catch most problems.

  • 1. Marker constituents in range
    Compare the main constituents against a published reference range for that botanical and origin. A marker sitting exactly at the top of the range on every batch is more suspicious than one that moves with the crop.
  • 2. The minor peaks
    Genuine oils contain dozens of trace constituents. A chromatogram that is suspiciously clean — two or three big peaks and almost nothing else — can indicate a reconstruction built from isolates.
  • 3. Unexpected compounds
    Anything present that has no business in that botanical: a common carrier fatty acid, a synthetic marker, or a constituent typical of a cheaper species used to extend the oil.
  • 4. Physical parameters
    Specific gravity, refractive index and optical rotation are cheap, fast checks that catch dilution. They will not catch a sophisticated adulteration, but they catch crude ones immediately.

Who Buys This Grade

Aromatherapy brands selling single oils direct to consumers, where the customer reads the label closely and expects a batch report. Spa, massage and wellness chains standardising treatment oils across sites. Practitioners and training schools needing consistent, well-documented material. And personal care formulators who want this level of analytical certainty in a leave-on product.

If you are buying for soap, candles or household products, the natural essential oils catalogue is usually the better commercial fit — same purity standard, wider range, priced for volume. If you need a certified organic claim on pack, start with organic essential oils. For dilution work, pair with a cold pressed carrier oil.

Questions Worth Asking Any Supplier

Buyer's Sourcing Guide

Is therapeutic grade a certified standard?

No. There is no regulatory body, pharmacopoeia or accreditation scheme that awards it. Any supplier can apply the phrase to any oil without breaking a rule. Treat it as a category signpost and buy on the analytical documentation underneath it.

Then how do I compare two suppliers honestly?

Ask both for the GC-MS and COA of the actual batch they would ship you, not a generic specimen report. Compare marker constituents, origin, chemotype and batch date. A supplier who sends a batch-specific chromatogram without pushing back is telling you something a brochure never will.

Can essential oils be taken internally?

We do not supply these oils for internal use and do not provide dosage guidance. Ingestion of concentrated essential oils carries real risk and should only ever happen under a qualified healthcare professional's direction, within the regulations of your market. Oils intended for food use are a separate, differently specified category.

What claims can I legally make on my finished product?

That depends entirely on your market and product classification, and it is your regulatory team's call rather than ours. What is broadly true everywhere: describing an aroma and its traditional use is very different from claiming a product treats, prevents or cures a condition. The second turns a cosmetic into a medicinal product in most jurisdictions.

Why does chemotype matter so much in this grade?

Because the same species can produce very different chemistry depending on where and how it grew, and in aromatherapy applications that difference is the whole point. Thyme CT linalool and thyme CT thymol are both genuine thyme oil with very different profiles and very different suitability for skin contact. Always name the chemotype on the purchase order.

How do I store this grade to protect it?

Amber or dark glass, tightly closed, cool and away from light, with minimal headspace. Decant working quantities rather than opening the main container repeatedly. Oxidised citrus and pine oils are more likely to cause skin reactions than fresh ones, so storage is a safety matter here, not only a quality one.

Do you supply allergen and IFRA documentation?

Allergen declarations and IFRA statements are available on request for oils going into cosmetic and fragrance applications, which is what your labelling and safety assessment will need. Ask for them with the quote rather than after the order.

Can I audit your facility or send a sample for third-party testing?

Independent verification is welcome — send a retained sample to a laboratory of your choice and compare it against the COA we issued. Buyers who test us are the ones who stay, and a supplier who resists independent testing is telling you why they resist it.
