How an Absolute Is Made

Jasmine cannot be steam distilled. Neither can tuberose, mimosa or lilac. The heat destroys the delicate molecules that make those flowers smell the way they do, so the industry uses solvents instead — and the resulting material is an absolute, not an essential oil.

The process runs in two stages. First the flowers are washed with a hydrocarbon solvent, which pulls out the aromatic compounds along with plant waxes and pigments. The solvent is removed, leaving a waxy semi-solid called a concrete. The concrete is then washed with ethanol, which dissolves the aroma but leaves most of the wax behind; chilling and filtering removes the rest, and evaporating the ethanol leaves the absolute.

Two consequences matter to a buyer. Absolutes are far more true-to-flower than any distilled equivalent — that is the point. And they carry trace residual solvent by nature of the process, which is why some certification schemes and natural-product standards exclude them. Method detail: solvent extraction.

Why Absolutes Cost What They Do

The economics are brutal and worth understanding before you build a formula around one. Jasmine flowers must be picked by hand before dawn, because the aroma fades once the sun is up, and it takes a very large volume of flowers to produce a single kilogram of absolute. Rose is comparable. The labour is the cost, not the processing.

Practically this means three things. Absolutes are used at very low percentages in a formula, so cost-in-use is lower than the per-kilo price suggests. Price moves with the crop, so annual contracts protect you better than spot buying. And any jasmine absolute offered at a fraction of the market price is almost certainly extended — nobody is selling below the cost of picking.

Working With Absolutes in Formulation

  • Handling
    Most absolutes are viscous and some are near-solid at room temperature. Gentle warming and pre-dilution in ethanol or a suitable carrier makes them workable. Never overheat to speed this up — you will undo the reason you bought an absolute.
  • Colour
    Absolutes are strongly coloured — jasmine is deep orange-brown, oakmoss near-black. In a white cream or clear serum this shows. Plan the inclusion level and packaging around it rather than discovering it at pilot stage.
  • Regulatory
    Several absolutes carry IFRA restrictions, oakmoss notably so. Request the IFRA statement and allergen declaration with your quote so your safety assessor has them before formulation.
  • Natural claims
    If your product carries a certified natural or organic claim, check whether your standard permits solvent-extracted materials before specifying an absolute. Some do not — CO2 extracts are the usual alternative.

How do I know an absolute has not been extended?

Ask for the GC-MS and compare against a reference profile for that flower and origin. Extension is usually done with a cheaper natural of similar character, an isolate, or a diluent — all of which show. Price is the other tell: absolutes have a hard floor set by the cost of hand-picking the flowers, and nobody sells below it for long.

What residual solvent level should I expect?

Trace levels are inherent to the process, and the relevant question is whether the material meets the limit set by your market and product category. Residual solvent data can be provided on request where your specification requires it.

Can I get a concrete instead of an absolute?

Yes for several materials. Concretes are waxier, cheaper per kilo, and preferred for solid perfumes, balms and candles where the wax is not a problem. For alcohol-based fine fragrance you want the absolute, because the concrete will not dissolve cleanly.

What is the difference between Jasmine Grandiflorum and Sambac?

Two different species with genuinely different characters. Grandiflorum is the classical fine-fragrance jasmine — rich, fruity and indolic. Sambac is greener and sharper, and it is the flower used for mogra and for jasmine tea. They are not interchangeable in a formula, so name the species on the order.

Do absolutes have a long shelf life?

Longer than most citrus essential oils, because there is little volatile material left to oxidise, and many absolutes round out over the first year. Store cool, dark and sealed. Colour deepening over time is normal and is not by itself a sign of degradation.

Which absolutes are flower-derived and which are compositions?

An important question in this category. Some names in the wider absolute trade — muguet, lilac, orchid and similar — have no commercially extractable absolute and are sold as compositions built to smell like the flower. Where that applies in our catalogue it should be stated on the product, not implied. Ask per product if you are unsure.
