The Mint Value Chain

Almost everything on this page comes from one crop. Mentha arvensis grown across the Indian mint belt is distilled to crude mentha oil, which is naturally high in menthol. Chilling that oil crystallises the menthol out, and what remains after the crystals are separated is dementholised mint oil. Both halves are commercial products, and further processing splits them further.

Why it mattersPrices across all of these move together with the mentha crop. If crude is rising, your menthol crystal contract is going to move too.

Menthol Grades and How to Specify Them

Menthol is bought on three things: pharmacopoeial compliance, assay, and physical form. Get all three onto the purchase order.

Pharmacopoeial standard
BP, USP or FCC depending on your market and application. Pharmaceutical and oral care buyers generally need a stated grade. Ask for the COA against the specific monograph rather than a generic purity figure.
Key parameters
Assay, melting point, optical rotation, appearance and residue on ignition. Optical rotation is the check that distinguishes natural L-menthol from racemic synthetic material.
Physical form
Crystal size affects dissolution rate and dosing behaviour, not chemistry. Large and bold crystals suit slow dissolution; fine flakes and powder dissolve and blend faster in high-speed production.
Natural vs synthetic
Both exist at very different price points and with different label implications. If your product carries a natural claim, specify natural L-menthol explicitly and verify by optical rotation — do not rely on the word alone.

Mentha arvensis, Peppermint and Spearmint

Three different mints, routinely confused, genuinely not interchangeable:

Mentha / cornmint — Mentha arvensisHighest menthol content. The feedstock for crystal production and the volume workhorse for cooling effect.

Peppermint — Mentha piperitaRounder, sweeter, more refined aroma. Preferred in premium oral care, confectionery and aromatherapy. Costlier.

Spearmint — Mentha spicataCarvone-led rather than menthol-led — sweet, no cooling bite. Chewing gum, toothpaste, culinary.

If a supplier quotes "peppermint oil" at a mentha arvensis price, they are quoting cornmint. Both are legitimate products; only one is what the label says. Applications

Oral care is the largest single outlet — toothpaste, mouthwash and floss all built on menthol and mint oils. Pharmaceutical and topical analgesic manufacturers use menthol for its cooling counter-irritant effect in balms, sprays and inhalants. Confectionery uses both crystals and oils for mints, gums and lozenges. Tobacco-free and nicotine-free product categories have become a significant volume buyer of crystal grades. And flavour houses buy DMO, menthone and carvone fractions as compounding materials.

How do I verify natural L-menthol rather than synthetic?

Optical rotation is the check. Natural menthol from mentha oil is optically active in a specific direction; racemic synthetic material is not. Ask for optical rotation on the COA alongside assay and melting point. Price is a secondary signal — natural material tracks the mentha crop and synthetic does not.

Why do menthol prices move so much?

Because the entire chain depends on one agricultural crop concentrated in a single region. Acreage, monsoon and crop yield move crude mentha oil, and everything downstream follows within weeks. Buyers with steady annual volumes are usually better served by a contract than by spot purchasing.

Which crystal size should I order?

Driven by your process, not by quality — the chemistry is identical. Fine flakes and powder dissolve and blend fastest, which suits automated dosing and high-throughput lines. Bold and large crystals dissolve more slowly and are preferred where traditional presentation or slow release matters.

What is DMO and what is it used for?

Dementholised mint oil is what remains after the menthol crystals are removed from crude mentha oil. It still carries strong mint character with reduced menthol content, and it is widely used in oral care, flavour compounding and industrial applications. Available crude or rectified — specify which.

How should menthol crystals be stored and handled?

Cool, sealed and away from heat. Menthol sublimes, so an inadequately sealed container loses material and the aroma migrates into everything stored nearby. Keep it away from other flavour ingredients in the warehouse, not just for its own sake but for theirs.
