Walk into any shop and the same two words stare back at you from the shelf. “Therapeutic grade.” It sounds official. It sounds tested. It sounds like a promise.

The phrase itself is not the problem. The problem starts when it is the only evidence a seller offers. A good supplier says “therapeutic grade” and then hands you the paperwork to prove it.

The 5 Real Markers of Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils

Forget the label claim for a moment. These five markers tell you far more about quality than any grading term ever will.

1. A GC/MS Test Report

Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry is the industry standard test. It separates an oil into its individual chemical constituents and identifies each one.

This matters because adulteration shows up. Synthetic linalool added to lavender shows up. A cheap oil stretched with a similar-smelling species shows up. So does dilution with an odourless carrier.

The question to ask is simple. Can I see the GC/MS report for this batch? Hesitation is your answer.

2. The Botanical Name on the Label

“Lavender” is not enough. Lavandula angustifolia and Lavandula latifolia are both lavenders, yet their chemistry and their uses differ significantly.

Chemotypes matter too. Rosemary comes in a cineole type and a camphor type. Thyme has several. These are not interchangeable in a formulation.

3. Country of Origin and Extraction Method

Where a plant grows changes what ends up in the oil. Soil, altitude, climate and harvest timing all shift the constituent profile.

Extraction method matters just as much. Steam distillation, cold pressing, solvent extraction and CO2 extraction produce genuinely different products.

One important distinction. An absolute is not an essential oil. It is solvent extracted, and it should be labelled and priced as an absolute.

4. Batch Number and Proper Packaging

Look for a batch or lot number on the bottle. Without one there is no traceability, no way to match a COA, and no recall path if something goes wrong.

Packaging tells its own story. Essential oils belong in amber or cobalt glass, because light accelerates oxidation. Clear glass or plastic storage bottles suggest the seller is not thinking about shelf life.

5. A Price That Makes Botanical Sense

Rose otto needs an enormous quantity of petals to yield a small amount of oil. Sweet orange is a by-product of the juice industry. These two cannot logically cost the same.

So when every oil in a range carries an identical price tag, something is wrong. Either the expensive oils are diluted, or they are not what the label claims.

Match the batch number first. If the number on the COA does not match the number on your bottle, you are holding a generic document, not evidence about your oil.

Check the analysis date. Essential oil chemistry shifts from harvest to harvest. A report from several years ago tells you little about this season’s distillation.

Review the main constituents. Compare them against published ranges for that species. Peppermint should be rich in menthol and menthone. If a “peppermint” report shows almost none, ask why.

Look for what should not be there. Diluents such as dipropylene glycol, phthalates, benzyl benzoate or a fatty vegetable oil are strong signals of adulteration.

Confirm who tested it. In-house, third party, or both. A named laboratory adds accountability that an unsigned table does not.

You will find plenty of kitchen-table purity tests online. They are worth understanding, mostly so you know their limits.

The Paper Blotter Test

Place one drop on white paper and leave it to evaporate. A light oil should evaporate without leaving a greasy ring.

The catch is significant. Heavier oils such as sandalwood, vetiver, patchouli and myrrh naturally leave a mark. A ring on the paper does not prove adulteration for those oils.

The Smell Test

A trained nose is genuinely useful. Experienced buyers can often detect a synthetic top note or a flat, one-dimensional aroma.

That said, it is subjective. It works as a first filter, never as a verdict.

The honest conclusion is this. At-home tests can raise suspicion. Only laboratory analysis can confirm purity.

  6. Is this an essential oil, an absolute, or a CO2 extract?
  7. What shelf life and storage guidance do you provide?

A serious supplier answers all seven without hesitation. Vagueness on any of them is worth noting.
