How to Tell If an Essential Oil Is Truly Therapeutic Grade
The label is the least reliable thing on the bottle. Here is what to check instead.
Walk into any shop and the same two words stare back at you from the shelf. “Therapeutic grade.” It sounds official. It sounds tested. It sounds like a promise.
Here is the uncomfortable truth. Therapeutic grade essential oils have no official regulatory standard behind them. No government body defines the term. No agency certifies it.
That does not mean the oil in the bottle is bad. It means the label alone tells you nothing useful. You have to look deeper.
This guide shows you exactly how. You will learn the five real markers of purity, how to read a Certificate of Analysis, and the red flags that expose an adulterated oil before you spend a rupee.
What “Therapeutic Grade” Actually Means
Let us clear this up straight away. In short, “therapeutic grade essential oils” is a marketing phrase, not a legal category.
No government agency grades essential oils. There is no official body that inspects a batch and stamps it “therapeutic.” According to the FDA’s guidance on aromatherapy products, essential oils are regulated by how they are marketed, as cosmetics or as drugs, rather than by any grading system.
Some brands trademark their own grading terms. However, a trademark only stops others copying the phrase. It does not prove what is inside the bottle.
So what should you trust instead? Evidence you can actually check:
- A current GC/MS test report for the oil you are buying
- A batch-specific Certificate of Analysis that matches your bottle
- Full disclosure of botanical name, origin and extraction method
In other words, you can check those three things. A marketing phrase, on the other hand, proves nothing.
Why Honest Suppliers Still Use the Term
Here is the nuance. Plenty of genuine suppliers, including us, describe their oils as therapeutic grade essential oils. In the trade the phrase has become shorthand for an unadulterated oil suitable for aromatherapy use.
The phrase itself is not the problem. The problem starts when it is the only evidence a seller offers. A good supplier says “therapeutic grade” and then hands you the paperwork to prove it.
The 5 Real Markers of Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils
Forget the label claim for a moment. These five markers tell you far more about quality than any grading term ever will.
1. A GC/MS Test Report
Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry is the standard test. Basically, it splits an oil into its separate compounds and names each one.
This matters because cheating shows up. For example, fake linalool added to lavender will appear. So will a cheap oil stretched with a similar-smelling plant. Likewise, a carrier oil used to water it down shows up too.

2. The Botanical Name on the Label
“Lavender” is not enough. Lavandula angustifolia and Lavandula latifolia are both lavenders, yet their chemistry and their uses differ significantly.
Chemotypes matter too. For instance, rosemary comes in a cineole type and a camphor type. Thyme has several. Therefore, you cannot swap one for another in a blend.

3. Country of Origin and Extraction Method
Where a plant grows changes what ends up in the oil. In fact, soil, height, weather and harvest timing all shift the make-up of the oil.
Extraction method matters just as much. Steam distillation, cold pressing, solvent extraction and CO2 extraction produce genuinely different products.
One important point here. An absolute is not an essential oil. Instead, a solvent pulls it from the plant, so it should be labelled and priced as an absolute. 4. Batch Number and Proper Packaging
First, look for a batch or lot number on the bottle. Without one, you cannot trace the oil, match a COA, or recall it if something goes wrong.
Packaging tells its own story. Essential oils belong in amber or cobalt glass, because light spoils them faster. So clear glass or plastic bottles suggest the seller is not thinking about shelf life. Our post on do essential oils expire explains how fast that happens.
5. A Price That Makes Botanical Sense
Rose otto needs a huge pile of petals to make a small amount of oil. Sweet orange, by contrast, is a by-product of the juice trade. Therefore these two cannot cost the same.
So when every oil in a range carries an identical price tag, something is wrong. Either the expensive oils are diluted, or they are not what the label claims.
Rule of thumb: if a rare oil looks like a bargain, you are usually buying a blend, a dilution, or a different species entirely.
How to Read a Certificate of Analysis (COA)
The COA is the most useful document a buyer can request. Yet most buyers never ask for one. Moreover, many who get one are unsure what to look at.

What a Proper COA Should Contain
- Product name and botanical name
- Batch or lot number, matching your bottle
- Date of analysis and, ideally, the distillation date
- Country of origin and extraction method
- Physical parameters such as specific gravity, refractive index and optical rotation
- The constituent profile, with percentages
- The testing method and the laboratory that performed it
The Five Checks That Actually Matter
Match the batch number first. If the number on the COA does not match the number on your bottle, you are holding a generic document, not evidence about your oil.
Check the analysis date. Essential oil chemistry shifts from harvest to harvest. A report from several years ago tells you little about this season’s distillation.
Review the main constituents. Compare them against published ranges for that species. Peppermint should be rich in menthol and menthone. If a “peppermint” report shows almost none, ask why.
Look for what should not be there. Diluents such as dipropylene glycol, phthalates, benzyl benzoate or a fatty vegetable oil are strong signals of adulteration.
Confirm who tested it. In-house, third party, or both. A named laboratory adds accountability that an unsigned table does not.
An important honesty note: the typical composition table you see on a product page is not a COA. It is a reference range for that botanical. Batch values always vary, which is why you should request the batch-specific document before a bulk order.
Red Flags: How to Spot an Adulterated Oil
Luckily, some warning signs show up before you even open the bottle. Learn these, and you will screen out most poor suppliers fast.
On its own, none of these proves a fake. However, two or three together should stop you from buying.
At-Home Tests: What They Can and Cannot Tell You
You will find plenty of kitchen-table purity tests online. Still, they are worth knowing, mainly so you understand their limits.
The Paper Blotter Test
First, place one drop on white paper and leave it to dry. A light oil should dry off without leaving a greasy ring.
However, there is a catch. Heavier oils such as sandalwood, vetiver, patchouli and myrrh always leave a mark. So a ring on the paper proves nothing for those oils.
The Smell Test
A trained nose is truly useful here. For example, seasoned buyers can often catch a fake top note, or a flat, one-note smell.
That said, it is personal. So treat it as a first filter, never as a verdict.
The honest conclusion is this. At-home tests can raise suspicion. Only laboratory analysis can confirm purity.
Questions to Ask Any Essential Oil Supplier
Copy this list. Then send it before your next order of therapeutic grade essential oils. In short, how a supplier answers tells you almost everything.
- What is the botanical name, and is there a chemotype?
- Can you send the batch-specific Certificate of Analysis?
- Where was the plant grown, and how was the oil extracted?
- What is the batch number and the distillation date?
- Do you test in-house, through a third party, or both?
- Is this an essential oil, an absolute, or a CO2 extract?
- What shelf life and storage guidance do you provide?
A serious supplier answers all seven without pausing. Therefore, a vague reply on any of them is worth noting.

What costs something is testing, traceability and honest disclosure. So shift your attention there. Ask for the botanical name. Then request the batch number. Finally, ask for the COA.
